On July 31, 2026, the Gu Laboratory held an end-of-semester gathering to celebrate the completion of the first half of the academic year. While enjoying Subway sandwiches and other food together, the laboratory members shared a relaxing and enjoyable time. Zhang introduced his exchange experience and research life in Canada, while Fujii shared stories from his studies in Denmark. Their presentations offered fascinating insights into research and daily life abroad, accompanied by many impressive photographs that left everyone amazed by Zhang’s photography skills. Fujii’s story about making his own Jiro-style ramen during his stay also brought plenty of excitement and laughter! Thank you to all the laboratory members for your dedication and hard work in research and study over the past six months. We look forward to continuing to learn from one another and making the rest of the academic year equally productive and enjoyable!

On June 17, 2026, the Gu Laboratory welcomed a visiting researcher from the United States for an academic exchange. Through research presentations and discussions, we deepened our understanding of each other’s research fields. The exchange provided a valuable opportunity to share perspectives and explore possibilities for future research activities and international collaboration.

On May 19, 2026, we held a welcome party for the new B4 and M1 students, as well as a farewell party for Rahma. The laboratory members enjoyed spending time together over food, warmly welcoming our new members and reflecting on the memories we shared with Rahma. Although her time with us was brief, we sincerely appreciate the wonderful moments we spent together. We wish Rahma all the best in her future endeavors and look forward to meeting her again someday!

On April 7, 2026, the members of the Gu Laboratory gathered for our annual spring group photo. With the beginning of the new academic year, we welcomed new members and started another year of research and laboratory activities together. On March 26, 2026, the graduation ceremony was held at the Institute of Science Tokyo, marking a new beginning for the graduating members of the Gu Laboratory. As spring arrived and the cherry blossoms began to bloom, our graduates took their next steps while carrying with them the knowledge, research experience, and memories they had gained in the laboratory. On February 13, 2026, the laboratory members gathered at an izakaya to celebrate CHANG Xinyi's successful doctoral dissertation presentation. We enjoyed dinner and conversation while recognizing her hard work and research achievements and sharing in the joy of this important milestone. Congratulations on successfully completing the doctoral dissertation presentation! We wish her continued success in the future.

In July 2025, ZHANG Siyuan of the Gu Laboratory attended the 16th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2025), held in Orlando, Florida, USA, and presented her research findings. The conference brought together researchers and practitioners from around the world in the fields of ergonomics, human factors, industrial engineering, and related disciplines. It provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, engage in academic discussions, and deepen understanding through international research collaboration. Her paper was also selected for the AHFE 2025 Best Student Paper Award. We are delighted that her dedication and research achievements were highly recognized. On July 30, 2025, we held a farewell party for Fujii San before her departure for an exchange program in Europe. The laboratory members gathered over food to reflect on the memories we had shared and to wish her well as she embarked on this new challenge. We hope that her time studying in Europe will be rewarding and filled with valuable experiences, and we look forward to welcoming her back to the laboratory!

On March 18, 2025, we welcomed faculty members from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to the Institute of Science Tokyo for an academic exchange. During the visit, we introduced our university and research facilities and held presentations and discussions on our respective research activities and future research topics. Sharing different academic perspectives and research environments provided a valuable opportunity to gain new insights and explore possibilities for future collaboration. After the academic sessions, we continued the exchange over dinner, where we discussed not only research but also university life and cultural experiences. The visit further strengthened our relationship with the faculty members from NTNU.

In December 2024, students from the Gu Laboratory attended the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, where they presented their research findings. During the conference, they attended a wide range of presentations in industrial engineering and engineering management and exchanged ideas with researchers and students from around the world. Presenting their work in an international setting and receiving feedback from diverse perspectives provided a valuable opportunity for academic growth. Their stay in Bangkok, a city known for its beautiful scenery and rich culture, also allowed them to broaden their international perspectives and deepen their cultural understanding, making the trip a highly rewarding experience.

On October 16, 2024, all members of the Gu Laboratory gathered for our autumn group photo. The laboratory is home to a large and lively group of students, all supervised by Professor Gu. Seeing so many members working on diverse research topics under one laboratory reminded us once again of the remarkable scale, energy, and sense of community within the Gu Laboratory. We look forward to continuing to support one another and making the most of each member’s individuality and expertise as we further develop our research and laboratory activities.

During the peak of summer's heat, we held a delightful Suika-Wari Event that became the highlight of our season. Under the bright sun, we gathered with anticipation, each taking turns to blindfoldedly swing and strike at the poised watermelon. Laughter and cheers filled the air as each attempt brought us closer to the sweet reward. When the watermelon finally split, revealing its juicy heart, everyone indulged in the refreshing slices. It was a cherished moment that temporarily whisked us away from the summer heat, leaving us with sweet, sticky smiles and cool relief.

In June 2024, Professor Gu attended the NINJAS4CARE Workshop in Trondheim, Norway, where she presented her research. The workshop brought together researchers from Norway, China, Japan, and South Korea to share their studies and initiatives aimed at developing smart, safe, and sustainable healthcare. Professor Gu introduced her research and discussed possibilities for future international collaboration with the participating researchers. On April 18, 2024, the Gu Laboratory held a welcome party for its new students. This year, in addition to students continuing from within the university, we welcomed two new members from Tokyo University of Science. The laboratory members enjoyed food and conversation together, deepened their connections, and warmly welcomed the new students. With eight first-year master’s students joining the laboratory, the group has become livelier than ever. On April 12-13, 2024, doctoral students CHANG Xinyi and ZHANG Siyuan from the Gu Research Laboratory attended the 1st Symposium on Zero-carbon and Intelligent Built Environment (ZIBE), hosted by Tongji University in Shanghai. The primary objective of this symposium was to explore innovative developments and future trends in low-carbon and intelligent energy within the built environment, against the backdrop of growing global energy demands and climate change. The symposium aimed to provide sustainable, clean, efficient, and intelligent energy solutions for urbanization and industrialization.
